It’s not surprising that behind many of these stories of Black and Latina women stepping forward about workplace toxicity, there’s usually a White woman executive involved. This happens b/c there’s this idea that White women are “better” and thus less violent White ppl
And White women, w/o experience, training and even a professional interest are given LOTS of leeway to lead complex initiatives to address racial inequities w/i a company or WoC are not believed, b/c society does not believe White women can be this violent in the workplace
And that’s the problem. People are more comfortable believing that White men can be racist before they engage w/the very long and violent history of White women terrorizing other women who are non-White. I hope we can have more honest convos about this in 2021 and beyond
A great place to begin would be to read @sejr_historian’s most excellent book — from your local book store!— and to listen to the Black, Latina, Native, queer women who are trying to tell you about history that desperately needs to be believed. https://www.amazon.com/They-Were-Her-Property-American/dp/0300218664
We’ve also seen this year a lot of Black ppl act in the name of White supremacy. In a lot of these stories, there are PoC ppl in positions of power also behaving badly. Too much power in the wrong hands is dangerous, full stop and all around.
