I know this shouldn't need saying, but just your annual reminder that the next 9 days are going to be rough as fuck in supermarkets and retail. A lot of staff have worked through the pandemic and are on their knees at this point.
They never thought of themselves as key workers but here they are. Their jobs have revolved around trying to keep everything as normal and nice as possible for you for months on end and they just want to not go from being clapped for in April to be treated like utter shit.
A lot were furloughed and then brought back to working environments that feel alien after such a long period of time and are still struggling to readjust. Both groups are dealing with the mental health implications, and the lack of personal autonomy they've faced throughout.
Plan your trip. Is the store doing booking slots? Are they extending trading hours? Can you order online and pick up in branch? Do they have self-scan handheld terminals or other payment options? Do what you can to relieve pressure on till queues and support the staff.
Please wear a mask where possible. Please social distance. Please take a step back when you approach a member of staff for assistance. Please be patient. Please wait your turn, don't reach over/in front of people to get items. Remember your manners.
The vast majority of staff will be trying to be as helpful as possible, in stressful circumstances with very little reprieve. If someone gives good service, let them know. Fill in those customer surveys, tweet the company, email the store. It never goes unnoticed.
In summary: stay safe, Merry Christmas and don't be a dick.
