Residential schools were explicitly assimilationist in design and a hotbed for systemic abuses that most experts see as part of a cultural genocide against Canada's Indigenous peoples. Stating otherwise is a complete moral indictment of a prospective PM. https://twitter.com/pressprogress/status/1338916831294320640
And yes, O'Toole acknowledges residential schools became a disaster or terrible abuse. But it's total bullshit to make the claim they were just about education. John A. Macdonald on the goal of residential schools wasn't about education but to "take the Indian out of the child."
The abuses suffered by Indigenous children, including punishments for speaking their own languages or practicing their own customs, wasn't some accidental byproduct of this 'education goal', it was explicitly baked into the premise.
I'd say I hope O'Toole takes the time to read the TRC report but it doesn't sound like he's interested.
