I'm a part-time CMO at @teal_hq so 2.5 days a week I am in the trenches with the team building the marketing strategy, channel strategy and building the brand voice and tone.

But.....how does it really work?

Key to being a PT-CMO: Be present

I close out all other projects and focus on the job in front of me. If someone needs me, they know to text me for the fastest answer....otherwise they wait until I'm back online.

Managing expectations is key.
The CMO will focus on GSM: Goals - Strategy - Management

Resources are needed to support execution.

I have created the goals, brand strategy, user profiles + channel strategy but need the full-time marketers to support the execution. I spent ~20% of my time managing them.
Usually best for early-stage companies

Fractional CMOs are perfect for seed stage companies.

You get a senior level marketing leader at a fraction of their price. Pattern recognition becomes a strength later in your career and you can tap into this with a seasoned pro.
Documentation and Operating rhythm

When I jump in on Tuesday morning, I have a doc to review with the week's focus from my team.

We do "1:1 weekly weeds" meetings on Tuesdays to remove roadblocks, give direction, etc.

The team does weekly standups to stay in-sync.
Builds out your marketing team

A PT CMO will think through your funnels and gaps in skills from your early hires. Use your CMO to build out the team you'll scale with + tap their networks for hiring and agency support.
PT C-suite hires are a great sparring partner

Make sure you balance the PT CMO's time with thinking vs. managing time. The benefit of having someone with fresh eyes can allow you to think of new monetization or growth paths.
Trust is everything.

I knew that I could do this with @davidfano because he is an empathetic and trusting leader (trust first is a core part of the Teal values).
Transparency is key.

At some point Teal will need a full time CMO.
As some point House of Wise will need more of me.

Constant communication is important between the CEO/CMO to stay ahead of shifts & needs.
