what do people think impostor syndrome means, really
impostor syndrome was coined after observing a group of high-performing late-career women with significant accomplishments act modest or downplay their own successes because of external pressures. it's literally just patriarchy.
anyone who has ever mentioned the phrase without pointing out that it's misogyny is doing a misogyny. it's not a surprise that it's misogyny, it's the definition of the concept.
I remember once being on a panel and a new professional asked a question about "how to get over impostor syndrome". first, you're a new professional with a fake degree: what you're feeling is genuine fraudulence, which will last until you accomplish something.
so my answer was like "it's not real!" with lots of handwaving.
then the guy next to me started talking. 🤦‍♀️
sure, patriarchy makes women feel shitty at all stages of their careers. just call it the patriarchy.

men are literally brought up to fake everything whether or not they eventually make it. that is a different problem. get your own grievance.
everybody's pain and struggles are real, our society makes us all feel terrible for everything all the time, you don't need to co-opt fancy terms to talk about it. you're already in the in-group, I promise.
