A thread on school closures & community transmission: Last night I rcvd a call informing us that my kids elementary school was going remote for the rest of the wk for some reason relating to 2 covid infections at the nearby high school. Right before a 2 wk winter break.
Same vague story right before Thanksgiving. As an essential worker I know full well what this actually means for me, my kids, my family, and community transmission.
Set aside that me being home wouldn’t be much better since my sp ed 5 year old is actually tortured by hours of remote learning combined w his therapy sessions. So what happens in this scenario? Their other parent is also an essential worker.
We have two diff babysitters in college who help us manage.
But they have classes & can only watch them in short bursts. So I combine those few hour chunks with help from my 73 yr old mom, 30 min away. All to get to my job at the hospital where I routinely cover for multiple ppl
This is reality for essential workers & their families. When schools close, we pay the price. There is more exposure, not less. There is less learning. My kids fall further behind. There is less safety. Less structure for children who need it.
They come up with unscientific rules that shift to their convenience at a moments notice. I was called again this morning bc my kids were marked absent. I was told not to worry, that this was done to simplify things before the holidays. I asked, “simple for who?”
In general I love the school and the teacher. I know this is hard & scary and we’d rather just hide until it’s all over. But there’s too much at stake for our kids. I’m an adult and I’ll manage (although being as were in a pandemic you’d want hospital staff to work)
But telling each other that kids are resilient over and over may be just that. Something we tell ourselves. #openschools
