In a previous life I was a Scottish Exec press guy. I had drug policy in my portfolio of subjects. First time the Drug Death stats were released they had reduced. I prepped a release welcoming the downturn which I thought was okay. (1)
Hugh Henry was the responsible minister and he said to me - we need to change the release. Why? I said. He then quietly replied. ‘One drug death is one too many, there is never any space for complacency and we are not doing enough.’I changed the release. (2)
That was over 15 years ago and things are much, much worse now that they were then. We need real change - allied to substantial investment. Hiding the problem was not a solution then and it isn’t now. (3 ends)
