The misinformation about #trans youth and #mentalhealth in this piece from @TheEconomist is astounding. Thread (1/9)
They cite that most adolescents who start pubertal suppression (PS) go on to take gender-affirming hormones. This isn't evidence PS made them trans. It's evidence they were trans to begin with & the clinic wasn't giving PS to kids who would later identify as cisgender (2/9)
Courts are not experts on informed consent for minors. Psychiatrists and pediatricians are. Policy statements from The American Academy of Pediatrics and The American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry make it clear that they disagree with the court's decision (3/9)
Major medical organizations have already outlined clear guidelines for the treatment of transgender youth (e.g., The Endocrine Society Guidelines). (4/9)
This statistic refers to prepubertal transgender children. Under current medical guidelines (again e.g. Endocrine Society Guidelines) prepubertal children are ineligible for gender-affirming medical interventions, including pubertal suppression (5/9)
There is 0 data that autism "causes" gender dysphoria or transgender identity. See Turban & VanSchalkwyk JAACAP 2019 (6/9)
The article claims gender identity conversion efforts are appropriate. Every relevant major medical organization has labelled these practices ineffective and dangerous. Turban et al. JAMA Psychiatry 2019 showed that these practices are strongly linked to suicide attempts (7/9)
The article also fails to cite any of the papers that show pubertal suppression is linked with superior mental health outcomes (e.g., deVries et al 2014, Costa et al 2015, Turban et al 2020, van der Miesen et al 2020, Achille et al 2020) (8/9)
Given this blatant disregard for scientific evidence, it is impossible to see recent coverage by the @TheEconomist as anything other than agenda-driven propaganda (9/9)
