The annual @theblcklst is always a day I reflect on my own journey. Since @franklinleonard created the list in 2005, I read the list, tried to read the scripts if I could get a hold of them, and learn the names of reps. 1/
In 2010-11, I hit my low in terms of self-confidence. I didn't think screenwriting was ever gonna happen for me. 2/
Then I remember reading The Imitation Game in 2011 and being so inspired by @MrGrahamMoore's writing. Then it finished #1 on 2011. Not that I could write at that level but I thought maybe, maybe my script can get on the list, too. 3/
So I queried RODHAM with the hopes of landing a manager and perhaps get 5 votes to make the 2012. I told my folks 2012 would be my last year I'd give this a try. 4/
In 2012, RODHAM landed high on the list, ahead of many writers who later won Oscars for their projects featured in the same list. 5/
I don't have the amazing careers like they have. But at the same time, since I have been on the Black List eight years ago, I have worked every year with this as my sole profession. 6/
RODHAM gained way more attention than it deserved. And it wasn't completely reflective of who I was as a writer. Even to this day, this 9-year-old script is my "writing sample." 7/
In 2020, I sold my biggest pitch in a competitive situation. In those Zoom meetings, the executives trusted me as that writer of RODHAM, a script they loved as assistants and CEs 8 years ago. 8/
In 2020, I sold my first TV pitch, based on a true story I've wanted to tell for over 15 years. Again, the TV people said "oh yeah, he wrote RODHAM." (I doubt TV people actually read it though. Haha) 9/
So 2020 was my best year career-wise. And it only took 8 years from getting on the Black List. Your mileage may vary. 10/10
Oops, I should rephrase. 2013 was my best year career-wise because I became a professional screenwriter, developing a feature project at Walt Disney Animation Studios. That was the best first job ever!
