The Canary are basically an unserious unfit grifting “publication” who do no due diligence or care with their output. Their editor is the modern day equivalent of a shock jock saying incendiary & clueless things to a desperate audience that’s at best offensive & at worst baiting. https://twitter.com/tombroadway5/status/1338905997922938882
They shouldn’t be promoted or encouraged, they have no actual grounding principles and represent the very worst of the movement. They have zero belief in responsibility so they don’t practice any, leading the ppl who engage with their output to become equally as irresponsible.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. It’s not really the fault of the people who read the canary any more than it’s the fault of people who blindingly drink in whatever The Mail vomits up on their pages. But eventually ignorance stops being a defence.
To their fans who keep coming to tell me about how they’re ~regulated~ please stop. I didn’t say they weren’t regulated. I said they were unserious. You might be impressed by IMPRESS but I’m not. The fact you think this is some defence of other publications is just brain worms.
I’ve started so I might as well finish.
As a publication or borderline responsible writer, journalist, reporter or editor, your primal focus should be to better or further the education of your readership.
We rightly criticise the shoddy output of mainstream media.

It should be no different for left wing media.
If you don’t exercise care in the subjects you publish, your readership or how your work impacts their understanding then you are failing.
Has The Canary improved since its founding? Sure.

Does it still routinely show little care or responsibility for the attitudes it either helps foster or exacerbates? Absolutely.
I’ve long championed for more easy access reporting and writing. I would’ve been the first to herald The Canary were they remotely responsible.

But they are not. They’re not alone in this, because the mainstream media aren’t either.
But they’re supposed to represent a change from the norm, not the left wing continuation of it.
Because easy access reporting and writing shouldn’t be sensationalist.

I have little to no patience for introducing a left wing version of the kind of mindless wibble that turns up regularly in tabloid journalism.
Should the media have a space for responsible tabloid journalism? Sure. Not everyone wants to read 6000 word missives or has time to.

But the answer is not, cannot be, and should never be The Canary. On that you just will not convince me.
It’s up to The Canary what they do with that criticism but I won’t be holding my breath.
