With the latest salary increase news, Harper is the only Big 5 publisher to not increase entry level pay. Our minimums remain at $36k while the next lowest Big 5 is at 40k.
As of January, a PRH new hire will be making more (45k) than ~50% of our union members, some of whom have been at the company over 5 years.
Our union contract only sets minimums. Management can't pay us less, but they have absolute freedom to pay us more at any time. They don't even need to consult with us to boost our pay. So what are they waiting for?
This is ugly and embarrassing for Harper and does nothing to build company loyalty or trust. We can all read—a necessity for the job, ha!—and we all see Harper bidding on other companies while leaving their current employees in the lurch.
Fewer than 20 of our union employees have been at Harper more than 10 years. While some of the turnover can be accounted for by folks being promoted into management, it's both wild and unsurprising that less than 10% of our people are happy enough with their lot to stay here.
