Caught up on Netflix's The Social Dilemma, and I wish I had that 90 minutes back. The movie was riddled with half truths, reductionist logic, and blatant fearmongering.

To be clear, I am NOT saying social media is not without its deep flaws (many named in the movie). 1/x
The movie does nothing but distract us from the real problem. (Spoiler alert, it is us!) When are humans going to realize that our relentless quest for money and power and complete abdication of the common good is the problem, not (just) our communication tools. 2/x
THIS is where our attention is needed, #CatholicTwitter. Social media is not this inherently "bad" barren hellscape in need of cancelling. We are not called to retreat away from it and to shut it all down. We are called to run into the breach and boldly proclaim the Gospel. 3/x
That means holding our institutions accountable, yes, but most of all, the people who run them, subscribe to them, or affiliate with them. It also means holding ourselves accountable and not using these mediums for anger, hatred, violence, or in place of all relationships. 4/x
I can't emphasize this enough: WE ARE THE PROBLEM. All social media has done is given us a window into a world without direction or moral grounding. Not only CAN we stop that, we as Catholics have an obligation to. We're given a crystal clear roadmap to do so: the Gospel. 5/x
I am sick and tired of the "welp, it's a mess, we're out of here" attitude of some Catholics on digital media. If we do that, we abandon social media to bad actors. Instead, pick up your Gospel, grab your rosary, turn on your smartphone, and let's get to work. /thread
Realized I was a little punchy in the above thread. I stand by what I said, but to close:

Catholics can use these tools for good. The opportunity for evangelization and for real, genuine conversion is here. We just have to rise to the challenge.
