I got the chance to tour Centre Block site today. While we were there we saw some blasting related to excavation of the pit for the new visitors’ welcome centre happen: #cdnpoli
There was a lot to see on the tour. I’ll note some (random perhaps) highlights for me. #cdnpoli
But first, the House of Commons Chamber, as seen today:
But first, the House of Commons Chamber, as seen today:
Being up on the scaffolding have an opportunity to see carvings in the Chamber (and elsewhere in the building) up close. In turn, TIL there are dinosaurs in the House! They’re part of an “evolution of life” series and line the top of the southern wall #cdnpoli
On the west wall of the Chamber, there’s also this guy petting a dolphin while holding a bird (as one does):
We also got to go up the scaffolding in the House foyer. The glass that usually adorns the ceiling has been removed for preservation (plan is to bring it back & restore a lightwell above to bring in natural light). #cdnpoli
I spent many hours staring up at the carvings around the House foyer when the building was open, but I never noticed there’s a cowboy (south side): #cdnpoli
Among the scaffolding that we scaled was the set up in the rotunda, giving a unique, up close look at the space. #cdnpoli
We also went up to the Senate ceiling, a plaster ceiling with gold foil that will be restored to its full glory as part of renovation. Among the carvings here (yes, more) is one of Joan of Arc (southwest corner). #cdnpoli
