-5 senior players out of contract at the end of the season at Arsenal, but they will still have a stacked squad.
- Combining players on lower wages so it’s about 50k+/week per position
- Will take 3 years to clear the squad assuming no contracts are awarded, and no sales made
- Arsenal need 5 yrs to be back at the top with a balanced, modern squad (Bayern, LFC level)
- But for next 3 seasons, they shouldn’t worry about league pos (7th-10th is fine)
- THE GOAL FOR NEXT 3 YEARS IS TO HAVE A TOP 8 SQUAD THAT CAN BE EASILY SOLD IN ONE WINDOW IF NEEDED
- For clarity, I’ve highlighted the top 10 earners in the 21-22 squad.
- Not many top players barely 3 players who can be moved in the transfer market due to age/wage/role.
- This means the squad can't be quickly adapted (while generating revenue) to suit particular tactics
- Once they have such a squad, they can spend 2 years tying down their best players, adding star players and refining the squad (=easy sales) to suit tactics (which is why having players with high market desirability is essential at this stage)
- In the first 3 years, it’s important to buy players who play conventional modern roles and use mainstream, offensive tactics
- offensive because it makes it easy to develop attacking talent and increases their desirability too https://twitter.com/reverse_ball/status/1338673645900554241?s=20
- Conventional tactics because it makes it easy to develop players (most talents already shaped to play those roles)
- Increases appeal if sale is needed
- Trying to gain extra points through unusual tactics should be avoided https://twitter.com/reverse_ball/status/1338672018074419202?s=20
- During this process it’s preferable to have managers and players who have never earned much, and don’t yet see themselves as top 4 players/managers
- That will help keep the players and staff in good spirits while they may be finishing 7th-11th https://twitter.com/reverse_ball/status/1338481870577704961?s=20
- For the last 2 years of the process, Arsenal can completely change gears
- Get the best manager possible
- Employ whatever tactical system needed
- Refine the squad to suit said tactics
- Buy players without thinking of their future market appeal
- Tie down best players
- Seems like a lengthy process, but Arsenal will have been out of top for 6 years, so needing 4-5 yrs to be back is fine.
- More crucially, what makes human beings happy is not success but progress.
- Fans know more about their football team than most people do about their job
- Contrary to popular belief, football fans are not at all impatient. They are simply very good at sensing whether there is a sense of progress at their club.
- Arsenal themselves are an example of this as some fans still believe in Arteta as they see his tactics only improving
So, while this seems like a long journey with 3 years of mediocrity, as long as the progress is obvious, fans will love it.
Progress needn't be in terms of points & positions. Fans, as I said are insanely intuitive, and will appreciate the profile/age/wage of squad being changed
