feelin' cute might do some citizen's journalism.

A DEFINITIVE ANALYSIS OF NYC COUNCIL MEMBER BANNER PHOTOS:
Before I begin, here are the rules I set for myself.

- The point is to encourage members to have a bit of fun in these 1500x500 frames
- Not trying to shame anyone (but some of these are pretty bad lol)
- Some members have 2 accounts. I was not consistent in which one I chose!
District 01: Margaret Chin

Honestly? I could probably just stop here and declare the winner (though there are no winners). Tai Chi in the park is peak New York, and I love the hat.
District 02: Carlina Rivera

Bikes will always get high marks from me. And judging by the sign this might be a protest ride? Even better. Overall a great shot.
District 03: Corey Johnson

For a politician known for being open and getting personal, this is a pretty safe (aka boring) choice! I know you're the Speaker and you've gotta show some respect for the institution, but this should absolutely be changed to him dancing at Pride.
District 04: @KeithPowersNYC (now I realize I should be tagging people)

The first of many shots of CMs in City Hall. I like these photos! This one seems like it was shot from the hip, because it's not perfect - but I think that makes it better
District 05: @BenKallos

Okay so he represents the Upper West Side and this is a photo of the Upper West Side. It's a good photo! but it's so depersonalized. I'm not here to play Sim City, Councilman!
District 06: @HelenRosenthal

Encouraging your constituents to vote is always a good thing.
...and yet! I think the banner photo is an opportunity to have fun, and I would encourage Rosenthal to have more fun here while still sticking to this message.
District 07: @MarkLevineNYC

The only acceptable graffiti is done by white men in suits. I kid, I kid! This is fun, and definitely in the spirit of what I think banner photos for politicians should be.
District 08: @DianaAyalaNYC

I'm gonna assume this is a photo of a block in Ayala's district. I think this is a much more effective photo than Kallos' photo, because it zooms in much closer to show the city as we see it every day. It's not "fun," but it's a great banner!
District 10: @ydanis

Hell yeah.
District 11: @AndrewCohenNYC

Okay just as a style point, I love a sweater/suit jacket combo. This is a great "politician" shot, and I think it's a very effective banner photo.
District 12: @MarkGjonajNY

Very on-brand for Gjonaj. He wants to protect small businesses and here he is speaking at a small-business rally. I wouldn't call this "fun." But I think it's good for what it is.
District 14: @FCabreraNY

I'm a sucker for politician photos with kids. Especially when some of the kids clearly aren't having a good time lmao. This is a great banner photo.
District 15: @RitchieTorres

Okay so it's not like I can dispute the message, but an actual photo could deliver the same message in a cooler way!
District 16: @Vanessalgibson

Again - a photo of some people living their lives in The Bronx could deliver the same message you're trying to send here! Show me some kids playing soccer or baseball or something!
District 17: @Salamancajr80

Hard to beat this - it is so pure 😭
District 18: @revrubendiaz

You may not like it, but this is what peak performance looks like. I'm in awe of this banner photo. Shout out to the kid at the bottom step who is absolutely done with this.
District 19: @PaulVallone

I'm not 100% sure what's going on here but it seems important? When in doubt, err on the side of cute kids doing official-looking things.
District 20: @CMPeterKoo

Hanboks! We got hanboks here! Great shot. Great banner photo.
District 21: @FranciscoMoyaNY

A truly brave choice. It's not politics-related, or government-related. It's not even American! But damnit, Francisco Moya loves Barca, and he's gonna let you know it.
District 22: @Costa4NY

Okay I'm on record as a lover of bridges, but I dunno, man. I am not excited by this. Astoria has a lot to offer!
District 23: @BarryGrodenchik

What are we doing here? No one is having any fun. (I hope this isn't a solemn occasion otherwise I'm gonna feel like a real asshole)
District 25: @Dromm25

So this isn't "fun," but I love it anyway: A great shot of the Councilman, flanked and backed up by his colleagues, staring down the Mayor. the DRAMA!
District 26: @JimmyVanBramer

Yeah! He's smiling, he's working, he's your Councilman.
District 27: @IDaneekMiller

Such a good photo, I wouldn't change a thing about this.
District 29: @KarenKoslowitz

I appreciate the message! But this is a cropped photo and doesn't really fit the 1500x500 frame too well. I think the office could do better.
(whoops skipped 28)
District 28: @AdrienneEAdams

Like Cohen's, this is a great "politician" photo. I love seeing a politician speak powerfully and joyfully, as Adams is doing here.
District 30: @BobHoldenNYC

BOOOOOORING. And why are we going back in time?
District 32: @eric_ulrich

Hard to argue against someone supporting jobs, but like I've said before with other councilmembers, I think a photo could achieve the same effect as this plain text.
District 33: @StephenLevin33

This one kinda made me lol. It reminds me of Web 1.0 sites that would have a banner that said "welcome to my page!"

The old fashioned hanging sign tells you that you've arrived at Council Member Stephen Levin's official twitter page!
District 34: @CMReynoso34

If someone can tell me what's happening here, I would really appreciate it! I love it and I assume it's something that happened in his district. NEW YAWK, BABAY!
District 35: @cmlauriecumbo

As I've established elsewhere in this list, I am a fan of politicians expressing joy, so of course I love this photo. Cumbo is having a good time and now so am I.
District 36: @RCornegyJr

It does the job! I can't knock a politician for wanting to keep things professional, but I still selfishly demand fun.
District 37: @Darma37cd

Okay I gotta cut her some slack since she's the newest CM and her office definitely has much bigger things on her plate, but I would still encourage staff to change this asap.
District 38: @NYCCouncil38

He's got another profile but it's just his mayoral campaign banner and that's too boring. Plus look at the kid behind him absolutely stealing the show! This is pre-beard Menchaca talking to the children - a good shot.
District 39: @bradlander

I don't know what I'm looking at! If I had context I might appreciate this more, but as far as I can tell this is just a crowd of people and it's not telling me anything.
District 40: @CMMathieuEugene

Not bad at all! Another in a good series of "politician" shots. He's looking full of vigor, and he's fighting for the people.
District 41: @AlickaASamuel41

Okay I really like this. More members should do this combination photo/info banner!
District 42: @CMInezDBarron

DAMN! This is really in a league of its own. Phenomenal shot.
District 43: @JustinBrannan

A very interesting choice! I didn't peg Brannan as a fan of gingham or flannel, but I'd much prefer politicians do fun stuff like this so I will encourage it.
District 44: @KalmanYeger

Come on! Have some fun with this I beg you!
District 45: @FarahNLouis

This is very campaign-y, but I'm not mad at it. She's smiling, they're smiling, we're all smiling!
District 46: Alan Maisel

While we're here, what's up with this guy? What's his whole deal? Suffice to say, he does not have a Twitter account.
District 47: @MarkTreyger718

Mr. Treyger, former educator. Very on-brand, and frankly I love it.
District 48: @ChaimDeutsch

lmao come on
District 49: @CMDebiRose

Great shot! Debi Rose amongst the people. I'm surprised that more Council members don't have these kinds of photos as their banners, because I think they're great.
District 50: @StevenMatteo

This banner photo is the equivalent of the "IT IS YOUR BIRTHDAY" banner in that Office episode.
District 51: @JoeBorelliNYC

We're ending on a strong note! Showing off your family is a great use of the banner photo.
So what did we learn?

-Nothing. This is Twitter, where no one ever learns anything. But thank you for indulging this absolute waste of time! I hope it made you smile or forcefully blow air through your nose.
