According to the Hofstede Index, the U.S. is the most individualistic society in the world. Yet that value of individualism at the macro level allows for the formation of micro-cultures and sub-cultures who may develop more collectivist values.
What we have in the U.S. is a growing number of more collectivist oriented micro-cultures wanting to shift our macro-cultural values away from what they perceive to be as hyper-individualism.

the individualism of our past becomes associated with conservatism (Red team) & the collectivist values are then claimed by progressivism (Blue team).
So when a micro-culture movement like Black Lives Matter with more collectivist values grows in its cultural influence...

it is natural to expect the Red team to have a counter-response to the movement out of fears that it is a threat to their individualist value system.
The BLM & Blue team may call opposition to the movement "racists" misunderstanding some of their concerns and the Red team...

Are there racists in the Red team? Yes.
Are there Marxists in the Blue team? Yes.
But there are genuine concerns to BOTH individualism and collectivism that we'll miss if we demonize first.
