so frustrating that the musical form no longer has directors who understand how to shoot dance like Fosse could (and keep hiring people who cant dance rather than hiring superb dancers like Reinking) https://twitter.com/Johnny_Allman/status/1338651303510241280
Now that the movie musical is a popular genre again I keep waiting for an auteur to emerge that gets it like a Fosse, Minnelli, Donen, Berkeley, or even a Sandrich, Walters, etcetera. Where is he or she?
Yes there's too much editing in modern musicals but that's only part of the problem. Fosse used lots of edits but he was so smart about frequent wide shots so you saw the choreography and bodies. The closeups and medium shots were like commas, periods, exclamation points.
Today's directors use editing so you dont get bored (and to obscure less-trained dancers). Fosse used editing as just another piece of choreography. He understood cinema as well as he understood dance. Get someone who can give you both, Hollywood!
But basically we know that Hollywood isn't serious about the form or SUTTON FOSTER would be a mega-star by know as she has proven screen charisma (so engaging, pretty, and funny as the lead of "Younger") and her singing/dancing skills are top notch, too.
okay one last tweet on this. i'm always harping on this subject so i started a list of famous actors who Hollywood maybe ought to consider for musicals since they have the skillset already! (*not* a complete list. just started jotting down names)
and i can't believe i left off Anne Hathaway & Toni Collette but again it was an off the top of my head kind of list but i absolutely want to see them in some goddamn awesome movie musicals because they sing so beautifully
