Having lived in the UK for five years, I saw the benefits of a culture where the church has little ”cultural influence”—even the CofE. UK Christians know nothing of a ”culture war”. The culture is so post-Christian that the notion of a ”Christian political party” is simply non-
existent. In my experience, this freed the church up to focus on preaching the gospel and making disciples (*hint hint, the biblical mission of the church). I’m not saying that politics was of no significance whatsoever (I was there for the EU ref. in 2016), but it was nothing
like the rank partisan-divisions I’m seeing here in the States, having been back for nine months now. American Christians really would do well to learn from Christians living in other countries. There is a kind of quiet, humble faithfulness exhibited by many brothers and sisters
in places like the UK—yes, even and especially in the face of a very liberal, progressive agenda—that we in America ought to pay careful attention to. People in the UK are not up in arms over the fact that they are losing influence in the culture. That was lost a generation ago
(at least). So they just get on with evangelism and discipleship. Fighting for political power is basically futile. And when it comes to the New Testament mission of the church, I’d rather be known for the former than the latter.
