A reminder that back in March we were told the plan was to have - as far as possible - a single set of sustainable rules that could be followed for a long time. We now can't even get a week before new rules are introduced without them being rumoured to be changing.
Just this week we've had 1) a review of rules that won't even come in for just over a week, 2) an announcement that London's tiering had been reviewed two days early, 3) an announcement that tiering would now be reviewed weekly.
Every single one of these things leads to a new set of arbitrary legal restrictions. Every single time the first move is to reach for the criminal justice system to police the latest whim of government. It's absolutely ludicrous.
Things can and do, overnight, just like that, go from "fine, you can do this, we don't recommend against not doing this" to "you must now not do this on pain of criminal penalty". It is baffling to me how anyone think this is an acceptable state of affairs.
Additionally even this doesn't capture the relentless levels of uncertainty people are being subjected to. What does it mean for rules to be reviewed weekly if this pre-commitment is non-existent you can and do arbitrarily change them whenever you want? https://twitter.com/danielhowdon/status/1338866474358738944
I don't think it's a good idea to give any government, let alone a government led by the Conservative and Unionist Party of Great Britain, let alone *this* government led by the Conservative and Unionist Party of Great Britain these sort of powers for what is now pushing a year.
This is going to be my last tweet in this thread but at what point does this entire thing just collapse? At what point will *everyone* have just stopped listening altogether?
