Belated Happy Birthday to @taylorswift13! 🎂

To celebrate, HES's top Swifties have been working on some prime analysis* linking her #Folklore album with Scottish history so you don't have to.

*by which we definitely don't mean tenuous fan theories, nosirree
'the 1' is *surely* about the first historic property taken into state care in Scotland.

But just as finding ‘the 1’ is hard, it’s hard to work out which of our sites was the first. It's either Brechin Cathedral Round Tower or Fortrose Cathedral, depending on your definition!
We’ve all felt like an old, discarded 'cardigan' at times, but then again some cardigans are pretty ruddy stylish - like this Fair Isle number from Shetland!

Do you have any traditional knitwear patterns in your area?

'the last great American dynasty' could be a metaphor for the Darien scheme, when Scotland tried to create a colony in Panama.

Rather than forging a new era of prosperity, this colonial blunder left many Scots bankrupt...

Many Scots have written on 'exile'!

Here’s Coll poet John MacLean on emigrating to America:

“Gu bheil mi am ĂČnrachd sa choille ghruamaich, mo smaointean luanaich, cha tog mi fonn.”

“I am so lonely in this gloomy forest; my thoughts are restless, I can raise no song.”

It's said that once an Orcadian lass called Ursilla fell in love with a handsome selkie (legendary creatures that change from seals to humans).

When she wanted to see him she’d cry seven tears into the sea - much like in 'my tears ricochet'...
We believe heritage shows us every version of Scotland - a bit like a 'mirrorball'.

As we say in our corporate plan, ‘Heritage for All’, we want heritage to include everyone so we all benefit - excellent inspo for Ms Swift, we're sure you'll agree.

In 'seven' Taylor sings ‘passed down like folksongs, the love lasts so long’ - and we ❀ Scottish folk songs at HES!

There are many to be found in the @TobarDualchais archive - what's your favourite? http://ow.ly/GF0h50CI3iJ
'august' wasn't only a momentous month for Taylor, it was when many of our ticketed @welovehistory sites re-opened!

(Yeah, we had nothing for this one. For more info and to pre-book tickets visit http://historicreopening.scot )
John Damian, aka the Birdman of Stirling, could have been the poster child for 'this is me trying'.

Legend has it that in 1507 the alchemist for James IV tried to fly from the walls of @stirlingcastle in a chicken suit, but ended up in a muck-heap with a broken leg.
The scandalous tale of Maria Theresa Longworth and William Charles Yelverton surely counts as one of those 'illicit affairs'.

You can find the whole sordid story in this post from our blog: http://ow.ly/kXwo50CI51y
The ‘single thread of gold’ in 'invisible string' could be the title of Ewan Gillies’ biography.

After emigrating from St Kilda he worked in gold fields in Australia, New Zealand & America before returning home
only to upset the community, who forced him to leave for Canada.
As in 'mad woman', the persecution of women is historically familiar. But #DYK dealings with faeries were central to many witch trials?

Alison Peirson was tried for ‘haunting and repairing with the gude nychtbouris and Quene of Elfame’.

'epiphany' could easily have been written about the tragedy of the Iolaire.

Returning home to Lewis at the end of WWI, the ship struck rocks and sank - losing over 200 men in full sight of land.

Such was the impact it was said people still couldn’t speak it some 60 years on.
Any true Taylor fans already know that 'betty' was clearly inspired by the fraught question of succession between Mary Queen of Scots and Elizabeth I. Promises, betrayal, regret – it’s all there!
The first marquis of Huntly is responsible for this lovely heraldic fireplace, which would surely ‘keep your brittle heart warm.’

George made several other changes to #HuntlyCastle, including adding the famous frontis-'peace'...

#SorryNotSorry #NearlyThere
We love a good historical 'hoax' at HES, and none more than this Victorian fake news story involving an archaeological find that wasn’t quite what it seemed! 👇 http://ow.ly/fgmG50CI6o3
We’re definitely not jealous that 'the lakes' get their own bonus track, @TheLakesGuide.

But when TayTay’s done crying, we think she’ll find Scotland the perfect place to cheer up.

The Wordsworths called this view of Kilchurn Castle ‘enchanting’ - and you can see why!
Thus concludes our opus. #YoureWelcome!
