I think I am starting to understand some of the comments that Trump supporters have made to me regarding their support of him. In particular, I keep hearing that he's trying to help the economy while the democrats (or democrates, if you prefer) aren't. 1/8
This never made sense to me as so many of the republican legislative actions don't help most business owners. In fact, a lot of those who are voting for republicans are, in my opinion, voting against their own interests. 2/8
They are simply repeating, over and over, the mantra that the republicans have been repeating since the 80s. Republicans are pro-business. Trump supporters don't realize that republicans are pro-corporation but that doesn't translate into pro-small business. 3/8
In their minds, all businesses are functioning on the same level. A corporation is the same as the small business is the same as the family run farm. They don't realize that market competition means that those interests are often at odds. 4/8
Worse yet, they don't realize that favoring the corporations actually means the republicans are helping the large businesses put the small businesses OUT of business and push the gig economy idea forward to reduce costs and increase labor instability. 5/8
I think that if the democrats are to make any headway in the next four years, they need to start making the distinction very clear. It's difficult as the large corporations also fund their campaigns and make life difficult for anyone who goes against them. 6/8
Too many people are also willing to believe the corporate propaganda since they're afraid of losing jobs or seeing their communities suffer if those corporations leave (which they always are...it's an abusive relationship if I ever saw that one). 7/8
But I think the most difficult part is going against the nearly 40 years of indoctrination that the republicans are pro-business and that this translates into gains for the average person. I don't know how to make it clear to them that it really doesn't. 8/8
