I find it interesting that so many people are looking to condemn the performance of a rookie QB in his first start with an abbreviated offseason, no preseason, injured receivers and O-line, and the rookie played far better than the guy he replaced. I think Jalen Hurts was great.
Did Hurts miss stuff? Sure he did. That 40-yarder to Reagor would have helped. He reads slowly, and he needs to integrate his specific attributes into the offense. But I see a guy who's already more evolved as a passer than, say, Taysom Hill. And what he does for the run game...
...is a literal game-changer. He forces defenses to hesitate on the mesh point and react instead of attacking. The Saints hadn't allowed a 100-yard rusher in 55 games. The Eagles had two in Hurts and Sanders.
I think right now, the Eagles can assemble a Stefanski Lite package for him and win. Heavy boot, RPO, mesh, work the run game and cause confusion. The most important thing re: Hurts over Wentz is that with Hurts, the Eagles can call a complementary offensive game plan.
Anyhoo, here's what I wrote about Hurts after his first NFL start against a top-three defense, and it's clear to me that the Eagles have something to build on here. https://touchdownwire.usatoday.com/2020/12/13/jalen-hurts-carson-wentz-doug-pederson/
