1/ y’all larp about using a bitcoin node and multisig and whatnot but most of you don’t actually do it. shhh! you’re not fooling anyone
such a setup used to be for bitcoin wizards only but @SpecterWallet makes things more approachable. i’m a HUGE FAN but it’s not perfect. read

3/ so. @SpecterWallet is a GUI for bitcoin core, designed to work with multiple hardware wallets. that’s a mouthful i know
anyone who wanted to do this before had to fool around with the command line (
), set up a separate machine (
) or both (
)
specter has buttons

4/ i think it’s the first time i can actually recommend that normal people try using their own node with a hardware wallet and expect that they might actually successfully do it. that’s a huge achievement

but let’s not kid ourselves, most will still fail

5/ specter still expects you to carry out tasks like:
download, verify and install bitcoin core
get it to sync
edit its configuration file
initialize and set up your hardware wallets
figure out the above steps mostly on your own

6/ specter does help with clearly labeled buttons and some explanations.
but mostly still expects users to
read some guide /
watch a video /
call an expert.. in order to figure out the steps needed, and how to take them
but mostly still expects users to

7/ i call this “PDF syndrome”. imagine if coinbase required you to read a long PDF guide before use. that would make coinbase competitors very happy
don’t get me wrong, the team did an amazing job so far but if you larps think this is mainstream ready i have some bad news

8/ also, i like that people are recommending this setup which doesn’t require extra hardware like a raspberry pi, you can just use your laptop. that’s awesome. also a bit scary
using your malware-infested laptop for a bitcoin node is.. risky. especially if you’re no wizard

9/ yes, if you use hardware wallets, your private keys likely remain safe.
but your node doesn’t! malware can still steal your data, or worse, it can make your node lie to you: get you to accept fake bitcoins!
were you not running a node specifically to prevent that
yikes

10/ again, I ABSOLUTELY LOVE @SpecterWallet, they did a great job in a short time. just maybe don’t recommend this to your taxi driver yet.
they’ll get there though (and they can use your help!)
