1. Very concerned today by the views expressed by our newly appointed Children's Commissioner. Worrying that the role might cease to be that of champion for disadvantaged children in the community & in care. Concerned eyes now turn towards who will chair this govt's Care Review >
2. Vicky Ford tells us that the Care Review will be 'independently led'. Not necessarily independent, but independently led. That suggests that the Chair will need to be very strong & clear thinking to resist officials & the govt appointees s/he is likely to be surrounded by.>
3. I wonder what an independent Chair looks like? I hope it is not one of the inner circle of social work grandees who form part of the inner circle at Westminster & whom we see carrying out the gov't agenda. These are the people likely to be pressing their views on the Chair >
4. I personally would give up hope of a fair review completely if anyone linked to the private care sector or linked to the Tory party was appointed. I cannot see how they could command the trust of the care experienced community.>
5. I can't see anyone within our care community who'd have sufficient knowledge, experience, legal/professional qualifications, skills or gravitas to command the respect of politicians, professionals, vested interests & the demands of the care community & be seen as independent>
6. My own view is we probably need a respected lawyer to chair the Review, one who's fiercely independent, not cowed by politicians or officials. Many years ago I was taught law at Manchester University by Brenda Hoggett. Now she is Lady Hale. Lady Hale would get my vote as Chair
