The Battle of Nashville commenced #OTD in 1864, as forces under General George Thomas attacked the positions held by John Bell Hood’s troops outside @NashvilleTenn. #CivilWar
Hoping to draw troops away from his main attack on the confederate left flank, Thomas ordered General James Steedman to launch a diversionary attack on their right. Steedman’s men, including a brigade of US Colored Troops, performed well but failed as a diversion.
After morning fog cleared, Thomas’ main assault moved forward. Cavalry under Gen. James Wilson swept the rebel cavalry from the field, then swept around to their rear as three Corps under Generals A.J. Smith, Thomas Wood, and John Schofield hit Hood’s flank and routed it.
The confederate line was shattered. Troops under Benjamin Cheatham withdrew in disorder, forcing Hood to form a new line, much more compact and in better position to receive further assaults the next day.
