This week the Government changed immigration rules to “reform” the asylum system.
But to deport, not to protect.
Yesterday, @Stuart_McDonald asked @pritipatel why the Government didn’t “have the courage” to explain itself to Parliament.

Yesterday, @Stuart_McDonald asked @pritipatel why the Government didn’t “have the courage” to explain itself to Parliament.
The Government failed to give a clear response to @Stuart_McDonald and Parliament will not get to debate the details.
Instead, @PritiPatel repeated that the system is “broken”, as if that provides a blank cheque for cruel and regressive reform. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-54404554

When the Government says the system “is broken”, they suggest it’s something out of their control. But this is not an accident.
The asylum system has BEEN broken.
Broken by lack of funding, incompetent management and racist hostility to those it should protect.

It's been broken by successive Governments, along fault lines that run deep.
Since 1948, criteria for settling in the UK were designed to make it harder for people from (colonised) countries with mostly black and brown residents.

Today, people seeking asylum:
wait years for a decision on their claim
have limited/no access to legal advice
live in dirty/dangerous accommodation
are banned from working and must live on £5.66 per day
experience hatred, hostility and contempt on a daily basis

But this isn’t what the Government means by “broken”.
They seek to punish desperate people clinging to boats trying to reach safety.
Their plans do not fix the system, they smash it into a thousand pieces, attacking the right to claim asylum at all.

These changes won’t help ensure decisions are right first time, solve the housing crisis or alleviate suffering.
Instead, they add another layer of bureaucracy, making the system yet more costly and complex.
It will slam the door in people’s faces. https://twitter.com/ColinYeo1/status/1337039696220856322

We have the solutions. We’ve had them for years. It’s easy if you aim to protect, not deport.
Give people info and quality legal advice
Invest in asylum decision-makers

Properly fund local authorities to provide housing https://www.refugee-action.org.uk/fair-and-effective/

Things we HEAR from this Government:
The asylum system is “broken”
We must make it “firm and fair”
Things we SEE from this Government:
No action to truly fix the system
Changes which make it more callous and cruel

Things we SEE from this Government:

This Government does not want to fix the asylum system, they want to break the right to claim asylum.
