"What...You must be a joker!" the young mother reacted to my diagnosis

"Please where is your superior, I would like to meet him" she continued, I don't know how you passed med school

Superior enters..."Doc what's your diagnosis again?"

Me: Gonorrhea in newborn!

#OdogwuTales
Superior: wow that's a bold one, why do you think so...

I handed over the test done on the mother which showed she had an untreated gonorrhea and pointed out to the pus from the baby's eyes, chief I think that's "Ophthalmia Neonatorum"

Superior: Talk to us about "GONORRHEA!!!"
• What Is GONORRHEA?
- It's a sexually transmitted diseases caused by a bacteria called "Neisseria Gonorrhoeae"

- It's transmitted through sexual contact with the penis, vagina, mouth or anus of an infected person.

- It can also be spread from mother to child during pregnancy.
• Symptoms Of GONORRHEA

- Gonorrhea symptoms in men:

1. Painful urination
2. Painful or swollen testicles
3. White, yellow or greenish discharge from the penis

- Gonorrhea symptoms in women:
1. Increased vaginal discharge
2. Painful urination
3. Abdominal pain....
4. Vaginal bleeding in between periods and after sex
5. Pain after sex

N/B: Most women don't show symptoms and when they do, it's very mild.

• Gonorrhea can also affect other parts of the body such as:

1. Rectum/Anus: itching
2. Eyes: Eye pain, eye discharge and sensitivity..
to light.
3. Throat: sore throat
4. Joints: pain, red, swollen joints.

• Who Is At Risk Of GONORRHEA

1. Sexually active females younger than 25
2. Men who have anal sex with men
3. Having a partner who has other partners
4. Having multiple sexual partners
How Does A Child Get GONORRHEA?

- If a pregnant woman has gonorrhea, she may give the infection to her child as the baby passes through the vagina during delivery.

- This causes "Opthalmia Neonatorum" meaning Opthalmia (Inflammation of the eyes) in Neonatorum (Newborns)
Gonorrhea in newborn can cause the following:
1. Blindness
2. Joint infection
3. Life threatening blood infection.

Proper treatment of gonorrhea in mothers can prevent this, another reason why mothers should register for "Ante-Natal Care" during pregnancy for early testing.
• Complications Of GONORRHEA

1. Increased chances of getting HIV/AIDS
2. It can cause infertility in both males and females
3. Infection of other parts of the body like the skin and joints causing septic athritis.
• Prevention Of GONORRHEA
Prevention is as simple as ABC...

A- Abstinence from sex
B- Be faithful to your partner and pray they are faithful to just you
C- Condom use

N/B: For my kings, you don't need to ejaculate before you get infected, once you're in...you stand a chance!
For my queens, if you're sexually active and you're having painful sex, painful urination, bleeding in between period...SEE A DOCTOR

And to my "Duduke's" for your unborn child's sake...REGISTER FOR ANTE NATAL CARE!!!
