just want to say the biggest thank you to all the amazing guests/friends who popped up in our doc, + the excellent @tej_adeleye, an amazing producer who I adore in a big way, + the main reason it was any good. here's our doc - you can listen to it here https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m000q9fh
Tej and I had loads of amazing conversations, but there’s only so much that can fit into a half-hour doc... one thing that went was me listing all the small (but not so easy) changes I want in the theatre industry after this crisis, so I thought I would list them here:
- 1/5 of the seats in any publicly funded building to be free. yeah it’s a lot. it’s v blue sky. but imo it should still happen.
- no more restricted view seats, none. easiest way to get someone who’s scraped together ££ to never come back = have a show they can’t see.

- no buildings that aren’t wheelchair accessible. there are lots of theatre spaces that aren’t that I’ve seen amazing work in. but I feel a lot of shame I can’t recommend their shows to disabled people, + you should too. if it’s inaccessible in such a basic way it shouldn’t exist
- any publicly funded building to have to reflect the local community
- at least 5% above living wage for everyone who works in the building
- no more than 25% difference in salary through your all buildings
- free wifi + lounge space
- subsidised food/drink in every building

- single cubicle gender neutral loos
- any theatre that’s gone more than 2 years without a play by a Black or Asian British playwright (this is... most lol) to commit to 1 play by a Black Brit and another by a British Asian playwright each year for the next 5
- cheaper wine

- something about board members? but I don’t know enough about what they do to suggest anything

- FINALLY: no theatres being used as a temporary court space????? Birmingham Rep WYD
