THREAD: I thought hard before posting this because knee-jerk reactions help no one, but as the daughter of a Malaysian immigrant this is personal.

The idea of ‘indigenous people’ of Britain and use of this term, especially by far right, needs to be challenged at every point. 1/5
What do people mean when they say indigenous Brit - Romans, Ango-Saxons, Vikings, Normans, Huguenots? It reminds me of a brutal sketch by comedian Stewart Lee, which questions how far back we go. Our island has experienced immigration since the beginning of time. 2/5
And in the context of more recent British history, there needs serious self reflection and awareness about the fact we took over and colonised other countries, forcing people into poverty and in some cases to the edge of existence. This should be in the school curriculum. 3/5
As well as ‘indigenous Britain’ we should seriously challenge the term ‘expat.’

If mainstream media and culture use the term ‘immigrant’ to describe people who have come from another country to ours, why not the other way round?

It is a double standard that should end. 4/5
This comes back to how British culture and values are defined.

To me, the NHS is the best of British.

It is one thing that ties the majority of us together.

People from across the 🌍 coming together to care for others, in a British institution with equality at its heart. 5/5
