I won’t dismiss Shekau’s claim of responsibility for the abduction too hastily. We had made this mistake with the Chibok incident.
We’ve seen several pieces of evidence this year that Shekau has created cells in Niger and Zamfara states. I’ve constantly rang the alarm on this.

The attack itself bears BH hallmarks. Some residents said they heard the attackers screaming “Allahu Akbar” during the attack. Bandits don’t do that. Some of the boys that escaped said the victims have been divided into smaller groups. That’s what Shekau did to the Chibok girls.
That’s why I started suspecting since two days ago that Boko Haram could be the culprit. I discussed this possible in this interview with the @Telegraph yesterday morning. Read from where it says: https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2020/12/14/nigerian-troops-surround-area-gunmen-believed-holding-300-schoolboys/amp/
“However, there is a possibility that Boko Haram is to blame, analysts say. Abubakar Shekau, the leader of Boko Haram, has been trying to establish operations in the region west of Katsina State, said Bulama Bukarti, from the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change.”
But we shall know in the coming days. Shekau’s next move might be to release a video of the boys. If it’s bandits, they may counter-claim or release the boys. But let’s not be derailed. Whoever it may be, this is a horrible incident. We must focus on the safety of the victims.
