This morning I will be tweeting about our legal work @TheHowardLeague for children and young people in prison, with their permission of course
"you guys are the first people I turn to when when I need help in prison" - a young adult calling our advice line @TheHowardLeague this morning. He has long standing mental health problems recalled to a London jail, struggling to cope with 23 hour bang up
Heart-breaking to hear the happiness of a child in prison whose spirits are lifted because in the last week, for the first time since March, he is getting out of his cell to education 2.5 hours a day and gym/yard 1.5 hours a day; and he has eaten his dinner out of his cell twice
Great call from an 18 year old in a YOI. Since we last spoke, he started a course & got a cleaning job. We persuaded his local authority to give him care leaver rights. He says the work we've done helped him get back on track as it made him "feel like I got people on my side "
Next a 19 year old with ADHD on 23 hour bang up for around 2 months. No sign of any change; lost his job because of unproven allegations; our emails to the jail have not resulted in any change...yet - he is understandably feeling bored and stressed; lots of Covid in his jail
A call from a young adult in prison who has received our seasonal card - says it's really appreciated & "gave him hope" as he is sitting in his cell 22 hours day & struggling to get through to his probation worker to plan release - we will try to call on his behalf
The same young adult adds his current situation is a "big improvement" from his last jail where he only had 30 mins out a day so he reckons he can't complain....
