Over the lockdown period I was listening to a new album every other day, and the result of this was me properly getting into hip hop. Here are my top 15 albums from that time period.

Kicking off the top 15 we have Nas’ sophomore album
Obviously this is no illmatic but nas does well on this. Lyrics are good as always with above average production. my top 3 songs from IWW being

The fact that an album this good is so low is insane to me especially as it’s a 9 imo
The production on this is insane and there are some fantastic highs on this album such as

13. Stillmatic- nas
The second nas project on this list, Stillmatic is I believe, superior to IWW. The production is better and the lyrics are also better. It’s almost like illmatic’s younger brother. My favourite 3 from this album are

12. GRODT- 50 Cent
Easily 50’s best project. Obviously I had heard singles from this project but never the whole thing. The infectious production some of these songs have is breathing. The lyrics at times are superb (many men)

11. Ready to die- Notorious B.I.G
A truely fantastic album, and kicks off the section of albums that I think are 9/10s. Lyricism is top tier along with production being remarkable at times.

10. Marshall Mathers LP- Eminem
Ems magnum opus.we just started the 9s but this is a 10. A fantastic album with lyrics worthy of one of the GOATS. Em gets disrespected far too much given the fact that he has an album with so many iconic songs

9. The college dropout- Kanye
Another 10. The first of many for Kanye. One of the best debut projects of all time. The production really shines through on this, and the sampling is infectious. One of the best outros of all time.

The most recent album on this list. A true masterpiece from cudi. This album is just so moving. Cudi really struck lighting with this. Don’t think any album will ever hit me on an emotional level like this

7. Graduation- Kanye
The narrative this album is bad is insane to me. Drunk and hot girls is not a skip either despite what people say. Yes the lyrics aren’t great, but Kanye wasn’t going for that and the production is just insane.

6. All eyez on me-Tupac
This is getting into the perfect album territory. The narrative it’s too long is strange to me because every song is so good that the whole experience is great. Tupac’s best.

5. Late registration- Kanye
The final Kanye project on this list. I think this is a perfected TCD. Sampling improved tenfold. Lyrics improved. Currently think this is his magnum opus (subject to change soon)

4. The blue print- Jay Z
My favourite Jay Z project. Whilst Em was superb on renegade, Jay was still great on the song. Production A1. Don’t think Jay will ever top this imo. Lyrics are up to Jay Z standard as usual.

3. The miseducation of Lauryn Hill- Lauryn Hill
This album is Practically the mother of every sample known in the hip hop game now. The influence is off the charts. Production is timeless. The greatest piece of work ever put out by a female artist

2. illmatic- Nas
this is the better of the top 2 albums,I just prefer first. Not to take away from this masterpiece. Perfection.The story telling is aided by the grimey production on show. Makes me feel like Im in queens.

1. Madvillainy- MF doom
This album from the first listen had me hooked. Production is so unique and fresh. The story telling is great. The lyrics are also A1. So many great songs packed into such a short amount of time.
