Lucifer song analysis: Devil Devil by MILCK

Holy shit.

I had never really paid attention to this particular song until one of my friends requested it today, but it’s PERFECT. It echoes Lucifer and Chloe’s feelings for each other perfectly, as well as the betrayal both will feel
Before diving in, it’s important to remember the context

Lucifer invited Chloe on a date and then went to his therapy session. At that session Lucifer realizes that he came to Los Angeles looking for Chloe, and he found her. That revelation scares him into standing her up
At this point, I do believe Lucifer is in love with Chloe, though he would not call it love yet. He doesn’t know how to handle these feelings and they scare him because he’s never felt this way for anyone before
Devil Devil
Bones of metal, metal

“Bones of metal” invokes images of Lucifer’s invulnerability as well as the giant wall that he erected around himself. But both of these things have been dented by Chloe Decker
You torture saints with a single glance
Make them think they ever stood a chance

These lines reflect Lucifer’s typical behavior with women (and men). He can get anyone to sleep with him, even a saint. But none of them ever stood a chance at winning his heart, until Chloe
Do not try me Devil, Devil
Cannot buy me Devil, Devil

I see these lines as being from Chloe’s POV. By standing her up, Lucifer is trying her. Chloe is falling into the trap she insisted she would never fall into. Falling for Lucifer Morningstar, the egomaniacal narcissist
Similarly, no amount of money or seduction will ever make Lucifer’s mojo work on Chloe. He may be able to catch anyone else using his powers but he cannot catch her
You won’t make a fool of me
Oh, no

I see these lines from both characters POVs

By standing her up, Lucifer is proving he’s exactly the man Chloe thought he was and Chloe is kicking herself for believing he was anything different
On the other hand, Lucifer is feeling betrayed as he doesn’t understand why he feels the way he feels about Chloe. Why is she special? Is she part of Dad’s plan to make a fool of him?
What makes you so special, special

The camera cut shifts the song to Lucifer’s POV

This is the question Lucifer has been asking himself the entire series

Lucifer has known Chloe was special since the pilot episode and ever since then he’s been wondering if his father sent her
So many ways Lucifer has learned Chloe is special

“You’re special, and I’m not worth it” (2x11)

It goes beyond just his mojo not working and his vulnerability. Lucifer has never been in love
he has his suspicions since 1x01 that Chloe was sent by his father so he’s scared of his feelings. No wonder he reacted so badly when he found out he was right all along about his father sending her
To think I would ever settle

This goes back directly to Lucifer’s session with Linda where Linda says Lucifer has stopped looking. Lucifer subconsciously decided to settle down with Chloe and that revelation scares him
Lucifer Morningstar is the Devil. The Devil does not fall in love. Why does Chloe create these foreign feelings in him? Lucifer’s trust issues are flaring up and the lyrics are very aggressive and accusing
Do not try me Devil, Devil
Cannot buy me Devil, Devil
You won’t make a fool of me
Oh, no

Lucifer has stood Chloe up. Lucifer is exactly the man Chloe thought he was. She played with fire and she got burned, and she won’t make the same mistake again
What makes you so special special
To think I would ever settle

We’re back to Lucifer’s anger and distrust for his feelings but the bomb shows the Mum feels the same way toward Chloe
Mum doesn’t understand why Lucifer is obsessed with Chloe to the point where he won’t even leave earth. Why has Lucifer chosen to settle with this random human? Mum does not trust Chloe at all
For that devious dance between me
And you Devil, Devil

These lines talk about how Chloe and Lucifer have been dancing around each other since the pilot

At this point, each is helplessly in love with the other, and they can’t believe they let themselves fall into the trap
Chloe’s trap is falling for someone self-centered with commitment issues like Lucifer that she should’ve known better then to trust

Lucifer’s trap is falling for his father’s trick when Dad put Chloe on earth for him and made him fall in love

Or so they both think
