Postscript from the #USWomensOpen:

1. I cover women's golf for a living but there were 40 players in the field I'd never met. Scrambling to double check pronunciations, the last one I spoke to Wednesday had one of the easiest to say - depending on the vowel sound. So...
I asked A Lim Kim: do you say it ah or ay? She said the latter. Now A is THE #USWomensOpen champ.

2. I'm a hopeless nerd when it comes to this sport. I love the big names - literally and figuratively, like Jutanugarn - but also the lesser knowns who may one day make it big or...
Who might play for a few years and be done, having achieved something significant just in reaching the game's highest level. The long and the short of it, from Su Oh to Sherman Santiwiwatthanaphong, is that I like names, period. Including ones that have periods, e.g. M.J. Hur.
Because behind even the plain names are the stories that never are. Like Amy Olson, who is married to a Grant. Just as I am to an Amy. So we joke that we're each other's second favorite Grant-and-Amy. She arrived on tour as an Anderson but now shares her married name...
With the father-in-law whom she loved and played for and introduced us to this weekend.

3. I've grown weary of the criticism of who wins these huge events. Like it has to be a star from a certain place or no one will care. We don't always know a star when we see it.
No one knew at the time how the career of the 1995 @uswomensopen champion or the one 10 years later would unfold. For @ANNIKA59, it was the first of 72 wins. For Ju-Yun "Birdie" Kim, who dramatically lived up to her name on the 72nd hole, it was the first and last.
Today may end up as the defining moment of A Lim Kim's career. If it is, that finish, like her namesake Birdie's, will forever live in #USWomensOpen history. Or maybe this is the beginning of something special. I don't know. But at least we'll know how to say her name. (end)
