It’s @starlingmag notification day, which always feels just a little bittersweet.

Mostly it’s HAPPY, capital H! 🥳

Huge congrats to those who have made it in, many of whom have tried multiple times before.

We are so proud to be publishing your writing....
For those who haven’t...

I want to lift back the curtain a little and give you some clarification.

For each issue we receive more submissions than ever.

This time we had space to accept 12% of the total submissions for publication.

Know that a “rejection” is not that...
It’s merely an indication that your editors are human.

That there is only so much room in each issue.

That we have our own tastes and we definitely don’t always agree.

There are often very close calls that slip just below the line...
Sometimes I worry our emails seem cold or unhelpful because we can’t offer feedback to every writer due to the sheer volume.

Your voice is important and valid.

Don’t give up.

If you are looking for an example, I admire @ninamingya ...
She is an award-winning writer and has had a stellar year, but like all of us she still has writing rejections.

This, outlining what she’s experienced this year is really generous and encouraging: https://twitter.com/ninamingya/status/1336399303380783106
One of the things I like most about Nina is she is a maker. She has a long history with zines and has established her own printing press @bittermelonpoem

You can read more about her process in this interview from Starling Issue 5: https://www.starlingmag.com/issue-5/five-writers
@ired0mi is another great example with their booklet POLEMIC.

I guess what I’m saying is, don’t let a no from us stop you.

Make your art, in whatever form that takes.

Rejections can be tough, especially when they accumulate...
Absolutely go hard. Go after what you want in your writing life. But——

[and I’m about to go full poetry-mum here]

—— don’t get lost in the grind.

Remember why you started in the first place:

Because you love doing it and you couldn’t stop if you tried.

✌️x
