Hun. Minister for Family, Katalin Novak caused quite an outrage yesterday with a propaganda-style video, talking about women’s role in society. “Women shouldn’t compete with men," Novak suggested, “They shouldn't think they have to earn the same amount of money men do.”

Here is why this video is not only outdated and sexist but harmful: right after quarantine started, numbers of domestic violence cases spiked up in #Hungary, G7. hu reports. https://g7.hu/adat/20200423/masfelszeresere-nott-marciusban-a-csaladon-beluli-eroszak-a-bunozes-negyedevel-csokkent/
And what does it have to do with Novak suggesting “women misunderstood emancipation” in the middle of a pandemic? Social and economic crises generally increase violence against women. In times like this, already unequal relations become even more unequal.
In quarantine, victims are constantly exposed to the will of their abusers. In violence against mothers, the child is often the main tool. [Hungary's government refuses to ratify the Istanbul Convention.]
Let’s also talk about the #paygap in Hungary: among full-time employees, the gap between average monthly gross earnings of men and women was 20% (!)in 2019. This gap widens with age, and the number of children women have.
