I think therapy is important for everyone, but I want to especially encourage former athletes to try it. Sometimes we’re not ready to walk away from our sport & I think Covid put a lot of dreams on hold. Talking things out with a professional who doesn’t know you can help.
I officially accepted that I will not play professional basketball a LONG time ago lol but I struggled hard with finding a career that brought me the same excitement like hoopin’ did. Had I prepared in college while I was receiving a free education, things would be different. But
It’s never too late to ask for help. And you’re not “weak” if you need help. If you think about it we had someone to go to for everything in college lol. I had someone to go to for hw, if i needed a massage lol anything. All that stopped when you graduated.
That is one of the many reasons why I feel like former athletes should try at least one therapy session. Our lives were literally scheduled for us off the court/field, etc. So when we’re facing the real world, it can be intimidating to ask for the help we need.
Especially if you were the best player on the team or had a unique skill set. Now you’re in an uncomfortable environment where you’re not the best and you feel helpless which isn’t normal for you.
But you have no idea what you DO have that can’t be taught. You can’t teach ..

A crazy work ethic. You can’t teach being coachable. You can’t teach being a team player. You can’t teach someone how to be competitive. You can’t teach that “whatever it takes” mentality.
And you have that. So, my rant is over, but there is life after sports. I promise you!
