[Thread] The fatphobia on social media today is really mortifying. Over the last 2 years, I have lost over 150 pounds, and It had NOTHING to do with me “getting off my ass” or “putting down the fries”. It had EVERYTHING to do with a shift in the resources I had access to.
In the spring of 2019, I became a resident assistant at my university, and the resources I had access to changed drastically. I had a broader selection of foods to choose from without the cost barriers associated with less processed foods.
Additionally, I moved into a building over the summer that had a small gym in it. I was terrified to use the larger gym at my school out of fear that people would speculate on and ridicule my health based on my appearance.
Moving into this building with a small gym (3 person occupancy) was a huge luxury, and allowed me to exercise freely while I figured out what works for my body (which is HUGELY IMPORTANT in starting a regiment).
These two things were a huge privilege for me. I didn’t have a shift in my thought process. I didn’t suddenly “start giving a shit about my body”. I suddenly had the resources to do what I personally wanted to do with my body without fear of external judgement.
The notion that fat people are lazy or less than is deeply woven into our culture, and I urge you all to think critically about whether or not it’s your business before you say something snide and hurtful.
It’s extremely important to recognize that some people are fat by choice, and some people are not. Either way, it’s NOT your fucking business! Worry bout your own body! Your weird comments can either make fat people who are comfortable with themselves uncomfortable, or....
Make fat people who would like to change their bodies but are unable to for myriad possible reasons (lack of access to resources stated above, fear of ridicule and harassment, underlying medical conditions, etc.) also feel uncomfortable.
Before you mouth off, ask yourself— is my comment a projection on how I think their body should look, and where does that notion come from? Do I usually express concern for this individuals well being (or any fat persons to be honest) at other times in regards to other aspects...
Of their well-being (have you donated to mutual aid efforts for those in your community struggling with food or housing insecurity? What does your commitment look like to anti racism and combatting transphobia that causes mental and physical health cascades?) and then, once....
You’ve asked yourself these questions, still pipe down and mind your own business :)
