A-Once the FDA releases a vaccine or a medication, there is still work to do. This is particularly true for the COVID vaccines. Despite 75,000 people in these trials, we may only notice infrequent side effects (or sometimes unexpected benefits)after 2-3 mil vaccinated.
B-There is a reporting system for severe side effects from the COVID vaccine. It’s the same system we’ve used for years ( VAERS). It works well for the FDA, but it is a bit cumbersome to use. It also requires patients to providers to go to the website and isn’t automated 3
C-Automation is the key to vSafe, the new CDC smartphone-based system. When you get your COVID shot, you’ll scan a QR code. vSafe will ask people about side effects every day for a week and then on a scheduled basis. If there are severe side effects, it also prompts the CDC 4
D-Another cool feature- for women who get pregnant or are pregnant when they get their COVID vaccine (after talking with their OB provider of course, the vSafe system will help track safety data.
E-vSafe is NOT mandatory. I am going to recommend it, however, as it will help identify safety issues sooner as opposed to later. (I wish the FDA would have this with new drugs they release in the future). vSafe is one more way to remind you to get your second shot 6/6
