I keep getting messages with this question. If Nigeria is as powerful as you claim then why cant they defeat Boko Haram? Others ask why cant Nigeria beat an army the size of a junior college. And this time they want me to make my answer public. So i will honor their request.
Dealing with the group is much more complicated. One thing that people always seem to not understand when dealing with terrorism is that, in no way, shape, or form is it like destroying a country’s military.
The Nigerian military remains the most feared in the region. There is simply no regional military force capable of defeating it in the traditional sense. It has more active duty personnel then the combined armies of all ECOWAS member states. Its airforce is larger than the
combined air forces of all ECOWAS states. The Nigerian Navy has more tonnage than the next 14 navies combined and the Nigerian military is by far the most best equipped, funded and technologically sophisticated. The naval blockade of the Gambia in 2017 and the subsequent
deployment of air power to Senegal and Gambia to enforce an ECOWAS mandate was a quick reminder of of Nigeria's conventional military strength. Against any regional foe it will be complete and utter annihilation. It has the most fearsome artillery and amoured forces.
However none of these will work for a terrorist organization like Boko Haram. We will be talking about Islamic terrorism, as it is the most prominent in the world.

You see, terrorism is like sand in your back pack. You could be thousands of miles away from the source and
never go back to the source, but you will always find pieces of sand in your backpack no matter how many times you wash it. Backpack meaning country, and sand terrorists, and washing it meaning killing terrorists. It is legitimately impossible to fully eradicate terrorism.
any more than it is to eradicate armed robbery. They are a hybrid force. The media tries to sell it to us that we can destroy them in the traditional sense and Boko Haram will sign the surrender document. They know this is not how it works yet deliberately mislead
people into thinking terrorism can be defeated in that classic scenario and if it doesn't happen it means the jihadi group is winning the war. For example Nigerian forces took back Sambisa and inflicted heavy losses on Boko Haram. In the space of 3 weeks Boko Haram lost
a third of its commanders. Insurgents were surrendering to the army in the hundreds due to starvation because the army had encircled every potential escape route. The President says Boko Haram has been technically defeated.....which is TRUE
some guy goes on a machete attack kills somebody or robs someone at gunpoint. Next thing the media calls it a terrorist attack. No its not....its just a random act of violence but they sensationalize it with headlines like :
''Boko Haram remains active despite claims by the Nigerian military it has been technically defeated''..or

''Nigeria keeps saying it has defeated Boko Haram against all the evidence'' or
''President Buhari's war on Boko Haram 'far from over' The murder of two people in a market in Borno have dealt a blow to President Muhammadu Buhari's claim Boko Haram has been technically defeated.'
You realize how destructive the symbiosis between the media and terrorism is. These manipulative reportage drives away much needed FDI. Just yesterday 20 Boko Haram insurgents were killed by the Nigerian army. It barely made the news.
If a civilian slips and falls or someone is robbed by gunmen the headlines will be buzzing with reports of another terrorist attack. What is nothing more than random violence and criminality will be treated as a major terrorist attack. Given this dynamics you know
60 years from now terrorism will never end. Because no matter how badly beaten or defeated all it will take is the murder of one or more people for the media to scream major terror attacks. This has dire economic consequences.. who wants to invest in a perpetual warzone.
