The second covid wave in NY State is very different from the first. Yesterday in NY State there were 120 deaths, of which *19* were in NYC -- which has 40%+ of the state's total population. Onondaga County (pop. 460k) had more deaths than NYC (pop. 8.4MM). 1/
Cases and deaths are distributed across the state, unlike in the first wave, where cases/deaths concentrated in NYC. And you see the same pattern in some other states. PA, for example ... 2/
PA had 69 covid deaths yesterday. *1* was in Philadelphia County. Allegheny Country, which includes PA's other big population center (Pittsburgh) recorded 6 deaths. But rural Erie County (pop. 270k) had 14 deaths. 3/
Obviously these figures are subject to data reporting issues (e.g., smaller counties sometimes don't report deaths daily). But the broad pattern shows that this horrible covid second wave is killing fewer people in cities vs. suburban/exurban and rural areas ... 4/
... relative to the first wave. /end
