Ceowulf II, known in History as a "foolish (Viking) King's Thegn" was much more than thatHe came into play when Burgred failed to secure deals w/ #Vikings after many payouts to leave MerciaCeowulf II thought if Mercia was to be free,it had to give lands to #Vikings2/11
When #Vikings moved to Repton (Center of Mercian Royalty) in 873-874,knocking on Burgred's door, Ceowulf II answered.Anglo-Saxon Chronicles write "He swore them oaths and gave hostages, so that it would be ready for them on whatever day they would have it."(History)3/11
Ceowulf II & his bishops went against Burgred to not be attacked by #Vikings, but rather, to rule w/ them & insure Mercian freedom & safety.Mercia's land was BIG! So Vikings & Ceowulf split it up. Any Area South & West, he "controlled."Burgred was exiled to Rome.4/11
From Regnal lists from Charters Ceowulf controlled (1 being Worcestre), we know Ceowulf ruled from year 874-79. (Anglo)In these years, he had to legitimize his rule by:
Going to WAR against King Rhodri of Wales in 873 or 877 & killing him(English)COINAGE

Ceowulf legitimized himself by Coins!What's interesting is his coin design was similar to Alfred's, the King in charge of the Anglo-Saxon Chronicles that talk bad about Ceowulf.
You can see in Pics that the "Two Empeors" & "Cross & Lozenge" look similar. Why?6/11

Be it by Minting Coin or Battling Wales, Ceowulf II left an imprint different from what the Anglo-Saxon Chronicles say.He extended his rule in Southern Mercia even more while #Vikings held the North.He died in 879, a King loved by Mercians, but shamed in history.8/11
