Some background info on US Soccer giving @ATLUTD a place in next year's 2021 Concacaf Champions League 1/
Firstly, it was a decision made by US Soccer, not Concacaf, which is expected to ratify the proposal this week.
Secondly, the reason for the decision is that the US Open Cup spot does not exclusively belong to MLS and US Soccer had to make a decision that at least gave the USL (and other leagues) a chance to qualify
Which is to say they did not want to give the spot to a MLS team for MLS-only achievements as the federation has many other stakeholders. This was the best they could come up with. End.
USL has also, incidentally, campaigned for its own CCL place in the past.
