(1/6) This morning, @DaveSharma said: “For those interested in the facts, NZ emissions have increased since 2005. Australia’s emissions have reduced by 16.6% over the same period.” To appreciate what he means, this thread looks at the graph below...
(2/6) From the graph, notice how Keating took CO2 emissions to 490 Mt/year (the lowest). Howard came to power and then took emissions to their highest ever, 620 Mt/yr. In 2005, Howard had emissions at approx. 618 Mt/yr…
(3/6) Rudd and Gillard then brought CO2 emissions down to 540 Mt/yr in 2013. When compared to the 618 Mt/yr in 2005, this reduction of Rudd’s and Gillard’s is 12.6%. @DaveSharma figure of 16.6% (compared to 2005) means today’s…
(4/6) …CO2 emissions are around 515 Mt/yr. In other words, since the Liberal and National Parties first came to power in 2013, seven year’s worth of CO2 reductions amount to 25 Mt. This is just 4% of the 2005. The graph also highlights that these 25Mt were achieved 2013–2015…
(5/6) Since 2015, LNP reductions hover around zero. In addition, the CO2 emissions graph shows...
• in 4 yrs, Keating cut 100 Mt
• in 12 yrs, Howard added 130 Mt
• in 6 yrs, Rudd/Gillard cut 80 Mt
• in 2yrs, Abbott cut 25 Mt
• in 5 yrs, Turnbull/Morrision cut zero Mt
(6/6) So, while @DaveSharma is not lying, he’s hiding the fact that since Morrison became PM (2015), the LNP have done zero to help reduce CO2 emissions and thus help tame Climate Change. It’s no wonder that so many countries around the world treat our government with disdain.
ADDENDUM #1: Interestingly... from (5/6), we see that Keating showed it was possible to reduce CO2 emissions by 25 Mt/yr on average. Imagine the strong position we'd be in now if the Howard government had followed through. We'd be leading the world!
