Lizzo....girl. Why?
It was inevitable.

The industry is so violent towards fat women. Of course she was going to submit to toxic diet culture. It was only a matter of time.
I saw it coming. I saw it.

From the training videos. The veganism. The rejection of the fat acceptance movement. All these are fine.

Over the years, Lizzo has replaced Gabourey as the new ‘black fat woman in entertainment’ everyone takes a swipe at.
Lizzo doesn’t owe us anything and she’s absolutely free to do whatever she wants.
I think the disappointment lies in a lot of us (especially fat, black women) seeing ourselves in a woman who was so proud and confident in her body.
It made us want to do the same to ours.
The body Lizzo exists in has opened her up to a lot of fatphobia. A lot of abuse. A lot of harassment and a lot of online bullying & health trolling.

I can understand how this can get to someone and why they can decide to change their body to be seen as more acceptable.
I have empathy for those who succumb to the pressures of fatphobia - especially when you are in the public eye.

Especially when you exist within several intersections that carry little privilege.
The problem here now, is that fatphobics and horrible people will now use Lizzo’s weight loss as a tool to further shame and abuse fat women who are happy in their bodies.
I just hope that people with either current or previous eating disorders aren’t triggered by that IG reel.

So much nuance is needed here, and I don’t think she should be ‘cancelled’ at all.

The true enemy here is fatphobia.
Let me make myself very clear here.

I’m disappointed in the industry and the public pressure to look a certain way.

I’m disappointed that someone who came from a bopo/FA community has done a 360 and is now promoting liquid meals and framing thinness as the prize.

That’s all
We all recognise the benchmarks and beginnings of fatphobia, and in this case it seems it’s slowly beginning to happen here, whether intentionally or unintentionally.

I assume it’s why a lot of people are upset.

But body autonomy is still a very valid thing too.
I keep adding to this thread because I’m thinking about it some more, soz. 😂

At the beginning of the thread, I was more shocked than anything because I’d only just seen the vid.

But also, it’s important to keep in mind that black women are held to a higher standard.
Rebel Wilson lost like 75lbs and literally has a new body but I don’t believe she’s been met with the same vitriol Lizzo has.

Partly because of the ~way~ Liz is going about it, not the actual action of weight loss itself.
Liz has that higher standard placed on her because of the identities she represents (fat/black/woman) and how rare it is for us to see one so hypervisible in an industry that prides itself on the westernised standard of beauty.
I think its important that because of this, we are able to hold space for empathy here. With regards to pressures/industry shit.

If someone wants to lose weight, let them. Who cares? But to do it in a way that could be damaging and triggering to others isn’t the way.
Because she may as well have been drinking flat tummy tea in that video. Essentially the same thing. Both promoting things that don’t actually work.
But yeah. I’ve only started seeing some of the really horrible comments about her and those aren’t cool at all. I get why she is being held to a higher standard, but it’s wrong all the same.
Sure, they may be some questionable things she may have contributed to in general, but it’s important to also remember who the real enemy is here.

As always, I’m just trying to provide nuance tbh. More than one thing can be true at the same time.
Long ass thread, smh.

Sorry if it seems all over the place. I had like 80 different thoughts over the last 2 hours and have been trying to communicate them as effectively as possible. 🙆🏾‍♀️
