So, what did Katalin Novák, #Hungarian minister for families say about women’s roles in society, #genderequality and about how women can become strong and successful in her recently published video? Thread 👇
1. First of all, the minister lists what a woman should NOT do to be successful. “We should not believe we have to constantly compete with men and have the same amount of salary and the same position as men.
2. Women should not believe they have to choose between a responsible job and being a mother, “living only for their families”. Everyone can decide freely.
3.” We are strong”, the minister continues. We got so much strength that we can easily carry the burden put on out shoulders, even the burden of others. She then adds:
4. “Let’s not renounce privileges for a misinterpreted equality fight. Let’s experience the beauty arising from the difference between women and men. Dare to say yes to children, to be present where no one else can replace us”.
5. Novák finishes with the sentences: “Rejoice that we can give life, that the beauty of love and caring for others is given to us. Let us rejoice that we have someone to take responsibility for.”
6. And a short note: with 53.0 out of 100 points, Hungary ranks 27th in the EU on the Gender Equality Index. Women earn 16 % less than men per month. The shares of women on the boards of the largest publicly listed have decreased.
7. Hungarian government rejects the ratification of the Istanbul Convention because of the inclusion of the word “gender”.
8. In October, speaker of the House László Kövér said: “It is an undisputed truth that the world belongs to those who populate it”.
9. He also pleaded with women to follow their calling as mothers for the nation’s survival. “Those who don’t want children choose a path of self-annihilation”, he said.
10. In November, the government proposed a constitutional amendment that stipulates that children must be raised with the Christian interpretation of gender roles. The bill also states that “mother is a woman and father is a man.”
