Over the past month, the #disability community and politicians have been head-to-head discussing the expedited changes to #MAiD, but what exactly is happening? Why are people with disabilities so distressed and afraid about these changes?
Changes to Bill C-7 mean that you no longer have to be dying to get the lethal injection.“No other...group, no matter the [oppression] of its individuals, is considered expendable and offered MAiD by the government because of its personal characteristics.” https://bit.ly/381DEay
“The #disability community is appalled that #BillC7 would allow people with a disability to have their lives ended when they are...not dying. This is not how we respond to the [oppression] of any other...Charter-protected group.” @KristaCarrNB @InclusionCA
Beyond the overwhelming #ableism in this change, there is another issue at hand: #MAiD could become the only option for many people with disabilities who cannot otherwise afford to lead a dignified life on limited governmental #disability support. #BillC7
In reaction to the COVID-19 pandemic, the federal government announced a one-time payment of $600 to those who receive the #disability tax credit in contrast to the $2,000 per month provided by CERB. This discrepancy is fundamentally inequitable. https://bit.ly/2K4Dhnp
A dignified life is one where access to necessary medications, groceries, and accessible housing are not out of someone’s reach. "It's cold comfort, I think, to be offered the choice to die when you are not offered the choice to live a dignified life.” https://bit.ly/3a8pHKn
