What makes a ‘Routine Play’ routine?

Here is an example by an elite SEC Shortstop. A thread ⬇️

**All times are +/- 0.015 seconds**
1/
The hitter goes H -> 1 in 3.335 sec

The ball isn’t fielded until 1.740 sec after contact, 1.595 sec remain once the ball hits the glove.

2/
The SS ‘Pop-Time’ is 1.259. The runner is out by ≈0.3 seconds (a whole step!)

The glove work isn’t perfect but it funnels to ball to the throwing side and does the job well.
3/
Transition time = 0.539 sec.
Ball flight = 0.72.

The ball is released ≈60ft from where 1B gloves it. The ball is released at 60mph to get there in 0.72 sec.

4/
The margin for error on this play ≈0.3 seconds which is a lot of time. The 0.539 transfer and the throw at 60mph off a small shuffle are elite.

Those are the skills that should be trained because those separate the good from the great in the IF.
