For years, the 49ers would get to their base 21 pers OZ Strong schemes out of this offset I with condensed splits. Being as efficient as they are with it, you have to have some solid counters off it. Here is a quick thread of a few I've found over the years:
With a wide Edge player expecting outside zone, power is a natural compliment. The kick out block for the fullback becomes a lot easier. Against Under fronts, the tight end isn't left in a1 on 1 either. He will often combo with the PST.
Linebackers pursuing hard over the top? Hit them with the reverse off power action with the pulling guard.
Inside zone weak. With the Z receiver digging out the strong safety, the numbers and angles on the cutback become much cleaner. Here the offensive line is able to wash down and seal their five, leaving the cutback lane for the RB.
Here is a Duo-Kick concept they've been running more of this year. Similar idea to power with the kickout and TE/PST double team. They like this in short yardage situations and against odd fronts.
Here is another version of inside zone where they insert the fullback.
Counter weak. Not called often, but's a tool in the toolbox.
Slicing the FB weak and still getting to outside zone strong adds misdirection when they've been sending the fullback strong often. If the last off ball defender flows hard strong, the cutback will be there. As this play shows, it can hit front side with good #'s too.
I will have to make a separate thread for play action and drop back passes out of this formation. In general, Shanahan and his staff protect their favorite concepts with multiple counters each week, and it's fun to track.
