You know, I really liked yesterday's episode but its been brought to my attention a big part of why is because I already knew what was happening... this thread is fair and lowkey opened my eyes to what was cut cuz I didn't even notice it since I've already gotten these scenes https://twitter.com/drunkhelos/status/1338444930105094147
in manga form, I watched the episode with my sister who's anime only and I decided to ask her how she felt about Reiner and she felt sympathetic towards him but the reasons where different then what was portrayed in the manga
The episode made her think Reiner was going thru split personalities like previous seasons, she interpreted the falcon scene as that specifically and tbh the way it was shot I can't blame her, It also took her a second viewing to notice his sarcasm at the dinner table because
The lack of facial expression... MAPPA is doing the best they can do so I'm not gonna blame the animators but I feel this is fair, Reiner's face really doesn't change much compared to the subtle emotions he displays in the manga, the small moments make things
Fill out scenes, add nuance, he doesn't look...sad, happy, annoyed, he just looks stoic and mad all the time, the end of ur thread pointed that out perfectly...great thread tbh, I still think its a great episode but at the same time I do think it portrayed certain things
In a way that would confuse an anime only, there was more I like them disliked ofc, still like the way the director played with the marleyean soldier yelling BOOM to scare the soldiers and Gabi yelling BOOM to celebrate, so I do think they are trying hard
But I agree the lack of emotion in a character that's practically the protagonist for the first half of this season is kinda worth the call out
